Underhill Center Post Office
Built in 1860
Now owned
by the town of Underhill
The building now used as a United States
Post Office was originally built by Ashton C. Dixon, Esq. as law offices. Around
the turn of the century, it was used as a milliner's shop by Roseanne and Lizzie
Breen. In 1917, Mrs. Helen de LaPorte purchased the building and donated it to
the town of Underhill. She wanted it "to be used as a library or for other
community purposes." It served as the de LaPorte Library from 1918 to 1964, when
the books were moved to the basement of the Town Hall, so the de LaPorte
building could be converted for use as a U.S. Post Office. During these
"library" years it also served as a serving and knitting center for the Red
Cross during WWI, and as a branch of the Farm Bureau in the 1930's. It has
served as a post office from 1964 until the present.

Benedict who has his medical practice, tavern, and inn there. The building was
also used as the Underhill Town meeting hall from 1832 till 1848. For some time
