Old Red Mill (Jericho Corners)
Built in 1855
Now run
by the Jericho Historical Society
In 1855, the mill was built by
Mr. James Hutchison for the price of about twenty thousand dollars. The mill's
foundation, first floor and wheel house are built out of stone while its upper
levels have six inch wood walls, sheathed in iron. In 1904, the mill ceased
being a flour mill and was bought by E.W. Baily & Sons for a feed store. It
later became a service station and has now become an historic landmark with some
public events being held there.
The Congregational Church built this building to
serve their growing body of members when the building they were using became too
small. The building was completely re-renovated between 1877 and 1878. The side
galleries were removed, and the pulpit was moved from the wall against the
entrance hall to the far side. On the wall behind the altar is a design called a
Trampe l'oeil arcade. The arcade is painted so that it looks realistic and
three-dimensional. This technique was also used on the borders of the ceiling.
The church is best known for its Annual Chicken Suppers which had been happening
for eighty years in 1972 and are still going.
